PM, Sonia morally responsible for SC ruling on Thomas: BJP
BJP today said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi were "morally responsible" for the Supreme Court ruling that declared the appointment of Chief Vigilance Commissioner P J Thomas as illegal.
"In the last 60 years, it has never happened that an appointment made by the Prime Minister himself has been declared illegal by the Supreme Court. The PM and Sonia Gandhi are morally responsible for it and they should accept this," Chairman of the BJP Parliamentary Party, L K Advani, told reporters here.
BJP president Nitin Gadkari said the quashing of Thomas' appointment is a "slap" on the government's face.
He said whatever wrong has been committed in the appointment of the CVC cannot be rectified now.
"Sushmaji had raised this issue before the PM but they did not listen to her. If the government would have considered it then, it wouldn't have had to face the quashing of this appointment," he told reporters.
The SC ruling is a "slap" on the government's face, Gadkari, who was talking to the media after addressing a seminar on corruption at the Delhi University campus, said.
Sources in the party said BJP is not not likely to demand the resignation of the Prime Minister on the issue which has proved to be an embarrassment for the government.
The BJP chief also said corruption would not have taken place in the 2G spectrum allocation had the UPA government adopted an e-tendering policy.

Central Vigilance Commissioner P J Thomas has resigned after the Supreme Court held his appointment as illegal, Law Minister M Veerappa Moily said today.
"He has resigned...the Supreme Court has also held his appointment as illegal," Moily told reporters here.
To a question on the apex court's rap on the government on Thomas' appointment, Moily said, "We respect the judgement. Other details we won't be able to say because we are yet to go through the judgement."
Shortly after the Supreme Court's verdict on Thomas, Moily met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss the issue.
Minister of State in PMO V Narayanasamy was also present.
After a brief meeting with the Prime Minister, Moily and Narayanasamy met Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.
